Is your organization looking to undertake its first strategic planning process? Do you have a plan that is in significant need of updating or refreshing? Are you (staff or board members) confused or overwhelmed by the very idea of doing strategic planning? You are not alone! Participate in this training session and get yourself organized to tackle one of the most important things a sustainable nonprofit can do. Clearly articulating what you plan to accomplish as an organization is an essential element for good fundraising, staff management, board recruitment, communications and more. We’ll talk about the terms and concepts surrounding the planning process. We will look at new thinking that’s helping strategic planning to keep up with the times. And we’ll discuss ways you can set your organization up for a successful planning effort.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explore some of latest thinking in strategic planning best practices, building an understanding and comfort level with the terms and components of the planning process.
  • Learn about new ways to approach strategic planning that will help their organization to be nimble and responsive in the face of constant change.
  • Understand the type of steps organizations can take before a planning process even begins, ensuring things are headed in the right direction.

About the Presenter:

Marshall H. Ginn, CFRE

Capital Development Strategies LLC

Marshall H. Ginn, CFRE, a consultant with 30 years of experience working in the nonprofit field, is the managing director of Capital Development Strategies LLC, a firm he founded in 2000 and based in Arlington, VA. Mr. Ginn is the former Vice Chair for Annual Giving of the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy. He is also the former chair of the selection committee for the Center for Nonprofit Advancement’s AIM for Excellence Award Competition (formerly known as The Washington Post Award for Excellence in Nonprofit Management.)

Mr. Ginn routinely makes presentations on resource development, nonprofit management, planning, and board development to his organizational clients as well as for the DC Public Private Partnership Conference, the Center for Nonprofit Advancement, the Foundation Center, George Mason University, Leadership Arlington, the Bridge to Integrated Marketing and Fundraising Conference, the AFP International Conference on Fundraising, and the BoardSource Leadership Forum.
